Ujamaa Dancers Perform at Colorado Black Arts Festival

The Ujamaa African Dancers and Drummers gave a smashing performance at the Colorado Black Arts Festival on July 19. The performance featured Fatu Lady Drummer as Musical Director, Cleopatra Jones as choreographer and local legends: Choreogapher Carmen Toure Lorenzo steppin out on the Douns, Stephan Cole Griffin, Senaku Reddick, Reuben Lorenzo, and Hip-Hop Master Deandre Carroll. The show opened with a tribute to Baba Adetunji Joda for twenty five years of teaching Yoruba dance and drum to the Denver Community. The group then proceeded to perform Kaki Lambe/Sonsornet, Mandiani with solos and a few improvisations. An excellent ending to a fun filled family packed weekend.
 

Camp Merveilles Drum & Dance Camp 2011

Event Description:

The 9th Annual Camp Merveilles will be held August 3,4,5,6,7 at the Avalon Ballroom in Boulder, CO. The camp, directed by Fara Tolno will feature local and international talent such as Marietou Camara and Fode Bangora. a minimum of 5 drum & 5 dance classes will be taught each day. Orisha Song & Dance to Yemaya in Japan

Ifa is the Indigenous Spiritual Practice of the Yoruba People of Nigeria.  The practice has three major components: Orisha Veneration, Ancestor Veneration and Divination. Orisha are Spirits are spirits of nature and are responsible for the rules which govern nature.  Orisha are anthropomorphized with human characteristics for the purpose of understanding their essence and being able to extrapolate psychological constructs.
